clownfish questions

hey, what up. my names shawn i have a 10 gallon mini reef tank with some crabs, 2 peppermint shrimp, a small randall's shrimp goby, and a occelaris clown. The reason i got into the hobby was from seeing my cousins tank, she had a pair of clownfish hosted by an anenome and that is what im trying to do in my tank. i have a white sebae anenome but he wont go in it .... are there any tricks????? thanks

Many times a clownfish wont go to an anemone. That is not a guaranteed behaviour. Clownfish definately dont NEED the anemone . He may , over time adopt it , but I have not heard of any tricks to make him .Have you researched what your anemone will need to keep it happy and healthy ? They need more lighting than what is usually on small tanks such as yours.Welcome to the board.

thanks. i found a site that said what clowns liked what anenome and it said said the my clown fish would like a carpet anenome so i might try to get a carpet and put my sebae in me and my brother other tank

Have you researched what your anemone will need to keep it happy and healthy?

Anemones require very specific conditions, especially lighting and should only be kept in very established aquariums with very intense lighting; Metal Halide lighting specifically. You have not said either way what your tank conditions are but it is important to point this out.

its an established tank the lighting is good it has power compact lights on it. the anenome looks very happy. if one of you could tell me how to get a good picture through the glass of my tank or how ever you do it, i could take pictures.

What kind of camera are you using? For me with my Kodak Digital Camera, it is a point and click kind of thing.

Hi Shawn,
A carpet anemone will be too large for a 10 gal tank. Also Sebae anemones (H. crispa) are supposed to be tan, cream, and brown with or without colored tips. A white one is an indication of a sick or bleached anemone. Their favorite food is small pieces of raw shrimp fed 2-3 times a week. They will also get too large for your tank if fed too often (I've seen them 20" across). They can do OK under VHO's (I kept mine under VHO's for 5 years before moving it under halides). PC's should be similar if the tank is not too deep.

Here is trick to try. Find a picture of a your fish in an anemone and tape it to the glass facing your anemone. I have heard of this working on several occasions. When your fish sees the other clown in the anemone hopefully he will get the hint. Let me know if it works.

Seriously though, keeping any anemone in a 10g tank is a no-no in my opinion.
Like Kevin had pointed out, they will just get too big for a tank this size.
Also, I agree totally that white H.crispa is indicative of bleached anemone and will need heavy feeding to survive. I would strongly advice to rethink adding carpet anemone to a 10g tank.Those anemones are notorious for doing poorly in tanks,let alone a 10g tank with PC lighting and they should be left where they belong-in the ocean ;)

thanks for the advise everyone. I desided to make it just one clown fish. The anenome seems to be happy in my tank and if it out grows it i will put it in my brothers second tank
