I have a 9lb. hunk of Fiji, and just noticed some sort of anemone or something growing on it. It is purple in color, very small, about the size of a quarter. The tank is an 80gal FOWLR (still cycling). My lighting is just twin normal out-put strip lights 48" 10k and Actinic. I'm trying to find out what it is on different websights. If some has an idea or where I could find out, That'd be cool. Thank you

Could you be a bit more descriptive? Are there visible tentacles? An oral disc? Round?

If it is purple and appears to have tentacles around it and the size of a quarter, I would go with a Flower Anemone. They are common hitchhikers on rocks and are harmless yet beautiful little anemones!

I think thats it, aipisitia(?)
That looks like it, same discription also. They don't sound desireable, but I think once I put my trigger in there, he might slurp'em out of the rock for a snack. I'm going to try and snag it out with a pair of tweezers, but someone had said they get spooked and retreat in the rock. All they could get were a couple of tentacles. We'll see what happens. Thanks

Aiptasia are are translucent with a brown coloration, not purple? If that is what you have, get it out fast as they reproduce quickly and turn out to be a real ugly problem. Do a search for "kalk injection" for a better idea than the tweezers.

taken care of.
The purple anemone I posted about is in fact a "good anemone", however, the aiptasia is there aswell. The other day I noticed two very small aiptasia, about the size of eraser heads. I read on wetweb media that peppermint shrimp have been known to eat the dreaded anemone, so I purchased two from an experienced SW only store. They have eaten the two in only one day, so far so good. My tests are looking good, so the tank seems cycled. I put my bicolor psuedo in there, its doing excellent, even knows when its feeding time. My skimmer is starting to show skimmate, I think it was just in a break in period. dark tea colored isht. Thanks for the replies.

That's good to hear Leddy!
You got lucky with the Peppermint Shrimp. Some of them will eat the Aiptasia, others won't touch them, I am glad they worked out for you! Scott Z. |

I know everyone hates the seaclone skimmers, or "suckclone" as its known on the site, but my skum cup is super nasty. Black, thicker than Guiness. For like 2 weeks it was just faintly yellow, then dark tea, now black. Is it because its a new tank, or was it just in a "break in" period? Anyway, it's starting to look like what I've heard about all the other skimmers; AquaC, Turbo, Prizm. As long as it skimms out the nasty mess, I'm happy with it. My test levels are looking nice, just a little brown algae, normal for a pre-mature tank. About 5 weeks old. So the SeaClone's cool in my book, just gotta give it time (if you have that to spare). I'll try to get a picture of the "good" little purple anemone.
