Emergency!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been noticing all these pockets of like jelly substance in my tank, its disgusting so i have been yanking them out, Yesterday I did a change from a 10 to a 20 and all I have is crushed coral and 3 little stone sculptures, nothing great yet. This morning I woke up and my watermellon wrasse was engulfed in one of them, I thought I lost her bc she wasnt moving so I went to go pick up the rock to remove her so the others dont die, when I picked up the rock she burst out of the bubble and swam around like crazy....is she having babies??? what should I do there is no safe place for her in there to have them, I have 2 clowns a baby blue hippo tang, and a royal dottyback. I dont even have a little tank set up to transfer her to. WHAT THE HECK DO I DO????????

If I am not mistaken the wrasse builds up the slime bubble like a bed and sleeps in the middle of it for protection. I have noticed in the past that some wrasse's do this. Im not sure what a watermellon wrass looks like but this is a possiablity.

Maybe Ninong will chim in he is the fish Guru

Hope this helps

Dont Panic

Jeff

I am no fish guru and I know even less about Wrasse's. I was intrigued by your post (and stang's reply) and did some searching myself and I couldn't come up with anything about wrasse's resting or nesting in a "slime bag" or anything silimar. I would love to read some literature on the subject if anyone has some they can point me to.

I have also seen "slime bag sleeping", when I worked at a LFS, once and I can't remember what kind of wrasse it was.

How new is this fish to the tank? Maybe it is stress to the fish that causes it, what are your Nh3 NO2 levels at?

There is nothing to be concerned about. Many wrasses sleep in a mucus cocoon ar night. They do this to mask their odor so that they won't be detected by predators while they are asleep.

P.S. -- Wrasses don't build bubble nests like dottybacks, wrasses are broadcast spawners. They swim up towards the surface and simultaneously release their gametes at the top of the rush upwards. This is one of the reasons male wrasses in aquaria end up on the carpet, they get a little over exuberant in their rush to the surface and forget that they don't have a 10-ft water column to play with.
