new tank? or not
hey!
i need everyones advice on this one. i currently have a 10 gallon tank with some live rock, and i am seriously thinking about upgrading it to a 30 gallon, becuase i saw this good deal for a 30 gallon with a hood, filter, and heater for 160$(good idea?). I can use my current 10 gallon as a sump for the 30, so if anyone would care to comment, can you please give me some ideas on how i could do the pumbing for the sump, and ect... if i decide to upgrade. also i need to know how much more live rock i would need for a 30gal, and if i should totaly switch my base which is now crushed coral to sand, and just basic things i should know before switching so i have an idea of how much i will be spending. thanks everyone! ![]()

i would keep looking for a better deal and let the 10 gal get fully established. you could probly find a 30 gal for cheaper if you give it some time. 160 is sort of a lot, that is what i got my 80 gal. for brand new, just the tank/light/glass canopy. if that price includes a wood stand and matching canopy, then its not that bad. take your time and be patient, dont just jump at the first thing you see, besides, you might be able to find a 55 gal. for around that price. I'd look in the classified ad's in the newspaper for something, or see if any LFS is having any deals or selling used tanks. remember, be patient, and dont forget to enjoy the tank you already have. good luck

I think Leddy is right on the money here. Don't jump on the first thing you see, I'd wait and get at least a 55 if not 70 gallon. A 70 gallon is only six inches wider then a 55. 12" vs 18" and that 6 inches makes a HUGE difference.

hey its reefer769,
sorry to say this, but i think a 70, or even a 55 is out of the question, i just wont be able to afford that big of a tank, and on top of that i would need to buy everything needed for it, and that would result in spending more $$$$. i was thinking more around a 30 or 40 Gal. |

thats sorry to hear, but i think if you squeazed your pennies you'd be happier. plus, if you want to upgrade later on down the road, your just gonna have to buy another tank and supplies. it might actually save you money getting the big tank, rather than getting a 30 and then having to get a 55 or 75. But what can ya do ya know. I think a 30 or a 29 would be good size for the time being. i dont know exact dimesions on the 30, but a 29 is 30" long/12" wide, as for height, its about the size of a 55. it definitely a good tank, this is what i started with. take your time though, you might change your mind or find a good deal somewhere.

I think a 40 gallon breeder would be nicer than a 29. Sure you get 11 more gallons but the dimensions are more "friendly" as well.
