Garlic?

I've been reading in the archives that garlic relieves ich when mixed and soaked with frozen food. Reading this, I have been using fresh garlic that I minced and chopped very fine and have been mixing with enriched brine, emerald entree', and squid. I let it soak for about 30-60 mins, but I have an extremely strong odor of garlic coming from my tank. How much garlic do I need to use? Is just a little ok as long as it soaks longer? Is this just the price to pay for using garlic? I need to start a quarintine tank, but I just wanted to try and treat it in the tank. The only fish that has it is the domino damsel, because I added an orange tail devil damsel, and the dom. is chasing him everywhere, so I think he's just stressing about the new tank mate. any advice would or comments would be excellent. thank you

I have never used garlic for my fish however most people report that a downside to it is the strong odor it leaves behind. I guess the only cure for that is Airwick, being very careful not to get it in your water.

yep, thats what i figured. keep away them damn vampires i guess. it's really weird cause the dom. doesnt seem to be affected by the ich. he is still really active and eating like crazy, i guess it'll just take some time getting used to his new roommate. i've delt with a few ich breakouts in my old freshwater tanks, but not really in saltwater. the good thing is that he's not on the brink of death, but just super stressed out about the blue devil. thanks scott

Garlic is not always the answer. Again I have never used it so I can only go off what has been reported. Some people say it cured the ich immediately from their fish, others say it never did a thing. Garlic is supposed to help increase the immune system and give them a better change to fight the parasite.

I'll give it a week and see what happens. I'm getting a 20t gal. tomorrow to set up Quarintine Tank, I'm just not looking forward to catching that dom. damsel. After a week i guess i'll order a pizza and get some brews, see what luck I have tryin to net him. thanks

Hi again... I forgot to mention that I take about 3 days worth of frozen cubes ( I feed 1 cube emerald entree in the am and 1/2 emerald, 1/2 brine in the pm, sometimes throwing in squid for fun) and I put that in a little wee tupperware container with a couple of tbsps of hot water to dissolve it all, add the garlic and leave it in the fridge till feedings so the food gets REALLY soaked! Then once the mixture is made, I use about 2 tbsps of the awful smelling stuff per feeding. I find it REALLY boosts their immune systems. I hope that helps!

melliepooh, i was reading your old archives about the ich being very visible at times, and then not visible at other times. that is the same with my domino., pretty strange. I'm gonna start using less garlic, but let it soak and marinate longer. before i was using like half a clove for 1-2 cubes of frozen, but the smell is way too potent in my tank. I hope it works, and thanks for the replies. good lookin' out.

Hi Leddy...Let me know how the garlic works for you...I should have bitten my tongue instead of talking about ich being gone b/c ITS BACK!!! Now my smallest common clown has spots all over her..OY! I'm going to start with the garlic again tonight, I've given them a break from it but I guess its time to start again... I guess you and I are in the same boat, huh? Who's going to paddle??? =) I'll cross my fingers for both of us!

the garlic is going slow. The domino is still the only fish that has it, but he's still very active and eating like crazy. I started using Selcon aswell with the frozen food and garlic. Trying to get this QT up and running, but the money situation is tight right now. I'll keep posting
