Aggressive Engineer Goby???
Has anyone experienced an aggresive engineer goby? Mine is approx 6 years old and about 7 inches long. He has been the only fish in my tank for several months. After a period of childbirth and broken leg I am ready to restock the tank. Two weekends ago I added a strawberry gramma. Things seemed fine for a couple of days. Once I saw the goby come out and meet the gramma face to face, but never saw anything else. The next day the gramma disappeared. I have a 90 gallon FOWLR, approx 120 pounds. 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, <20 nitrates (closer to 0, that is just how my test kit works), PH 8.3.
Thanks for listening. |

I think the goby has taken over the entire tank. After being alone for so long, he will think whatever you put in there is a trespasser...

Just an update...I spoke to my LFS and was told that an engineer that size will get nasty. I took all of the LR out yesterday and caught him. I took him to the LFS and one of her employees is taking him home. I'm going to miss him in a way. He's been with me for so long and gone through my learning phase of saltwater. Now on to restocking my tank!

Engineer Goby
This is late but it may help someone else. I own 2 engineer Gobies, I wanted an eel like fish without the "growth". The transformation of colors this fish goes through as it matures is very Awesome. From all my research and own experience gobies are peaceful and rather shy. I really don't believe that this fish caused harm to your strawberry gramma. It is more likely for it to have died from stress or jumping out of the tank rather than Killed by the Goby.
Good Luck. ![]() |

For future reference, you may want to stock with species that live together in the wild. This will help to reduce the problems of aggresiveness and the fish will behave more naturally. Keeping the fish well fed but not over fed will also help.
