    Quarintine tank

I was wondering if a 10 gal. would be ok for a QT. I was going to use my old 29 gal., but I sold it to a girl I work with. Just picked up a 10 gal and a mini penguin bio-wheel filter and a 50 watt visi-therm. Also, could I take some sand/crushed coral from my main tank put in the 10 qt? My domino damsel is looking better, and there are no signs of ich on any other fish, but I just want to make sure. Is this set up gonna be descent? I know I should've kept the 29, but money was tight and I really didn't have the room as the 80 was going in the closet where the smaller tank was. I think I'm going to use some dead skeletal corals I had for hiding areas in the QT, just to give it some appeal. Thanks

    Leddy,

That will be fine. I use a 5 gallon tank for QT. And yes you can take substrate from your main tank and use it in the QT, you CANNOT put it back in the main tank though. If an emergency ever arose you could even use a 5 gallon bucket and an Airstone!!!

You can put substrate from your tank into the QT, but I prefer a bare-bottom QT. If you ever need to use copper-based medications in the QT, the copper will bind to any calcareous substrate (sand, CC, LR, dead coral skeletons), and will complicate maintaining a stable concentration in the water. Short lengths of PVC pipe make great hiding places in a QT, and they're cheap, but admittedly not that attractive if your QT is going to be in plain sight.
As a nation, you're faced with the choice of taking over the world or offering good eats at reasonable prices.

there is only a thin layer, not even enough to completly cover the bottom. I had these dead skeletal corals, but i only put one in there, and now the rest are on the book shelf. now i have to try and catch the fish, sweet, that'll be fun. thanks
