vlamingi tang

In the last weekthe fish has developed large raised rough growths on his face and tail. Prior to the addition of a porqupine puffer this fish appeared to be normal. I have tried fresh water dips as well as kanacyn dips and I also have been using melafix, nothing seems to have an impact. Any help with the diagnosis or treatment would be welcome . Thanks

Hi rock413, Welcome to Reefland!

Are you sure these are "growths" and not wounds from a tank mate?

At first I suspected parasite caused scratching but they appear to be getting larger over time. I was wondering if it is perhaps a fungus?

I was thinking it might be lymphocystis. Check out these links anyway just in case it is lymphocystis:

http://www.enaca.org/Health/DiseaseL...ocystisDis.pdf

http://www.vet.uga.edu/vpp/CLERK/Kurkjian/

http://www.fishbase.org/Diseases/Dis....cfm?discode=4

Lymphocystis is a viral infection caused by an iridovirus. It is usually benign unless it gets out of hand and it usually goes away by itself eventually but adding HUFA enriched vitamins to food would be of benefit. There is no known cure in spite of the fact that some products claim to be effective against it. Sometimes it is possible to pick the lesions off with your fingernail if the infection in not extensive. In some respects it is similar to a Planter's Wart in people.
