Ghost Shrimp...
Can ghost shrimp live in marine environment? How should they be acclimated if this is possible? I am talking about the ghost shrimp most LFSs keep in FW tanks.
I want to feed my fish ghost shrimp as snacks, they are cheap and I already buy a bunch for my freshwater puffer. I have a very timid puffer and marine betta who need all the incentive they can get to eat. I fear if I just toss in some ghost shrimp that they will hide in the rocks till they perish. So I guess my question boils down to just how long will a ghost shrimp live in a full marine environment? I was thinking of trying to add a few to my marine QT tank and see just how long but I figured I better ask before risking a life. |

i fed my trigger ghost shrimp now and then. i just took some tank water and mixed it with the bag water, usually about a dozen or so shrimp. i'd see the trigger still chasing them after a few hours, the shrimp seemed fine. i just let em acclimate in the tank and bag water for about 30-40 mins, inside a separate container, them net em out and dump them in. i'm not really sure how long they can actuallly live in a marine environment, since the trigger ate em up too quick to see. ocasionally i'd see one a few hours after, but not by morning. i fed mine shrimp now and then only because i figured it'd be better then feeder goldfish. a more nutritious snack once or twice a month.

As for how long they last,,,I dont know. If they are just going to be an occasional treat they would be ok , but if you are looking to make them a steady part of thier diet you can find better options. Freshwater fish Contain different fatty tissues than marine fish and these tissues dont digest so well in the marine fish . I guess you could say it would be the equivalent of a human with very high cholesterol . If I recall correctly Dr. Frank Mariani did some research on this subject with lion fish . If you are interested you could do a search.

Hey Mekong, you have any luck with keeping them ghost shrimp in your tank? I put 4 in today, so far so good. I was reading a book that said they can survive in saltwater. They were in a fresh water tank when I bought them, but I drip-acclimated them for about 2 hours. I see them eating some hair algae on the rocks, and cruising all around the tank. I'm kind of affraid my peppermint shrimp will eat them, or my scarlet hermit getting them. Anyway, pretty cool little 25 cent critters.

Lost one so far, found him on a powerhead. I only see one cruising around the tank, dont know if they others got eaten or if they're hiding in the rocks.
