cycling tank
I've read a bunch of different ways to cycle tank, but I'm still confused.
Can I put the cured LR/LS sand in at the beginning and cycle from that point? Do I leave filtration on/off during cycle? I guess the key is to make sure the LR is as cured as possible to avoid any massive die off? Anything else I should be aware when I start the cycling process? Nate |

If this is a new tank with nothing in it, I have read that you can use the live rock to "cure" in the new tank during the cycle period. This will help establish the beneficial bacterial colonies needed for the cycle process. If you have life in there, then you would have go through the cure process before introducing into the tank. Also, I would use the live sand and filtration during this process as well, which should speed up the process. You can even schedule your lighting during this phase too. HTH

Looks like Mike has things covered well there. Just wanted to chime in with my agreement.

So, I can pick up some (what I think is cured) LR from my lfs, get some playsand and seed with LS, throw it in the tank and begin the cycle?
I just want to be clear on this. Do I have to worry about excess die off if not completely cured? Will that then foul the water or if it does foul the water wait for it clear up? Nate |

That is correct GoinSalt. Cured or uncured liverock will be fine and regardless of which kind is used, over a period of time (the cycle) it will cure out and allow for growth of the needed bacteria populations.

Plus you get to keep all the cool little creatures that might come with the uncured live rock. Just so you know, uncured is less expensive than cured live rock. Try getting a 1lb to 1.5lb per gallon so it will be easier to manage over time. Keep us up to date on your tank. Good luck!

There are also other places to buy LR besides the LFS. I use www.tampabaysaltwater.com They will ship airport to airport(you have to pick it up at the airport - cheapest way) or by UPS or Fedex 9 more expensive way). They ship it under water so it is cyred right from the ocean or Gulf. They can also send you live sand to seed the play sand.
