Cool gravel

I am setting up a 55 gal. tank, can I use freshwater gravel and rocks on the bottom? Do I have to get saltwater gravel?

Going to need a little more info. what type of salt water tank are you planning on keeping? Reeftank? fish only?

For either I would personally use pure aragonite sand. Do a search on the following words...Playsand,aragonite,substrate & DSB. you'll be up all night reading

The gravel is going to facilitate a nitrate problem by allowing waste to fall into the bed without anyway to remove it. Using a very thin layer of crushed coral that is vacuumed often or a DSB is more effective and looks more natural as well.

Also, rocks and gravel that are not ocean based, will almost definitely contain metals and other contaminates that will leach into the salt water.

Scratch the fresh water gravel and get a good substrate like sand, or crushed coral. Scott is right..this will lead to major problems later, and who knows what kind of contaminates are in the gravel to begin with.
