Cycling question

I have been cycling my tank for about 3 weeks now and about 4 days ago brown algae has started to grow all over. I am not using LR but ammonia has dropped to zero but nitrite is at .25. And i didn't think that my tank was done cycling until nitrite went to zero but i just read something that made me think that i was done. Does that algae growth just come with the cycling process or what? And should i leave it alone of should i remove it? And am i getting close to the end of the cycling process?
thank you

Welcome to REEFLAND.COM squiggz98!

What are you using to cycle the tank with? Brown algae is common for a salt tank to have, especially in the beginning. You can get a clean up crew once your tank is cycled. Depending on what you are using to cycle it with, the general rule of thumb is 4-6 weeks for completion. Live rock is best to have for handling bio loads, but as long as you have a good filtration system you should be fine. HTH

I am using substrate from an established saltwater tank as well as live sand.

Do you have a test kit to see where all the parameters are in the cycle? I would test it to see where it stands. It might still be in the cycle process. I would even consider throwing in a piece of raw shrimp to help the cycle process as well. It sounds like your off to a good start though.

Not really, but it would be easier for the bacteria to do their work, and easier for you to see what is happening, with the shell off.

When I set mine up 6 months ago, I just bought a piece from the grocery store. I would peel it before dropping it in.

brown algae is normal.....
shrimp is a good idea..
why no live rock? that would be a better investment.......
