    Anyone run without a filter?

and just leave it up to the LR and substrate? And also could the HOB filter be a big part of extremly high Nitrates? In my research i want to think yes but i need an second and/or third opinion.

Using your natural biological filtration (LR/LS) in conjuction with a good Protein Skimmer is a good formula. The use of other types of mechanical filtration can lead to nitrate problems if not properly maintained (i.e. filters not cleaned frequently enough, etc.).

i think im probably due for a claening then since i have never done it =). My substrate and LR is very established so im going to give it a shot. But the HOB filter may not even be needed?

    Thanks for the advice

The only thing the HOB mechanical filters are good for is running carbon. Some people use them for extra circulation but IMO, powerheads give you more bang for the buck. If you run carbon in your filter, you should change portions of the carbin weekly and clean it often to prevent it from holding waste and contrinuting to nutrients.

im using a marineland emporor mechanical. Any harm in giving it a shot and trying to go without and see what happens other than the carbon loss?

No harm at all, probably a benefit.

If your counting on the HOB filter to also provide current to your tank then yes, supplementing your current with a powerhead would be a good idea.

I took the filter off and cleaned it out, man was it nasty, loaded up with all kinds of growth and the cartridges were basicly clogged. I guess what i am most worried about is/was there any benefit to the algae growing in there? or was that just keeping my nitrates high and the fish wont notice?

I have a protien skimmer going so im sure the O2/CO2 transfer is going to be fine. is there anything i should worry about in that aspect?

No you shouldn't worry. In fact if the filter was that nasty, you should feel a bit relieved that you found it and addressed it.

Everyone was alive this morning so im a bit more comfortable with the notion of no filter.

i have a crushed coral bottom. Should CC be able to handle the bio-load just as sand woould. Im really considering sand, and reading up on it. just another big step to take. Im sure its also a good move but big.

I've used the Emperor filters and IME they need to be cleaned frequently, at least once a month. I'd also test and make sure you don't get a major cycle as the focus of your biological filtration shifts from the hangon to the LR.

    Red face

im just gong to go easy with it and if i have to go back to using it, no foul. I certainly wont push it to the point there is a problem before going back if i have to.

I am going to become a water test fiend though as i want to be sure getting rid of the filter is going smooth. feels odd to be filterless

Kinda of like going without underwear???

CC bottom is not as effiecent as a DSB, but with a small bio load I am sure you will be fine.

Scott's tank has a BARE BOTTOM and NO FILTERS either! Just a good Protein Skimmer!

Check out www.myreef.com for good skimmers!
