Question on Red Slime
I have been searching/reading the posts regarding red slime algae but still have one lingering question.
I have been monitoring my water quality, doing the turkey baster suction method of removal ( rock looks much better now ) but my question is.. with doing both of those things i can hope to retard its growth but will it ever die off and disappear on its own? can i beat it down to a point wher eit just cant survive any longer?

You can only beat it if the sources for it's survival are eliminated. The main culprit is an excess amount of nutrients that are in the system feeding it; if this is a new tank just battle it and with good husbandry you'll with the fight. If this is an established tank, something in your maitenance routine needs to be changed.

well red slime or any algae is natures way of removing pollutants.i believe the type of algae that grows depends on the quality of your lighting. plants and algae need fish pollutants to grow as well as light. algae are not always a bad thing. my aquarium is covered in a thick 3 inch long hair algae.it is completely covering the back and sides and of my tank glass as well as my rocks. it looks horrible but my water quality is perfect. in my opinion the algae works really well on removing unwanted pollutants...ammonia,nitrate,nitrate. i actually dose my aquarium with plant vitamins to help it grow
. i would let the algae grow unless you have corals that it can smother light away from. |

Well folks, im happy to report that my red slime seems to be dying off. I have been monitoring the water quality, cut back on my over feeding habit, and have the skimmer running just right and it all seems to be coming together.
I think that i even see some coraline growth here and there on the rocks. But if any of you have any tips on keeping coraline growing please le tme know. Thanks! ![]()

The only tip for coralline algae growth is proper calcium and alkalinity levels.
