damsel?

ok i have 1 damsel that killed 2 other damsels..........im about to put 2 clown fish in my tank to begin the first "real" fish i have in my tank. Should i take that damsel out due to the fact that i dont want him attacking or killing the clownfish or any other fish i plan to put in there?

also how long should i wait before i begin to start buying my clean up crew u knwo all the snails and starfish and shrimp and crabs?

Take the damsel out if you wanna add a clown. Some very aggressive clowns with a host to protect them would do alright with damsels but imo they aren't even worth the $2.

I added my cleanup crew during the cycle but I don't know if that is a good idea. The hermits and snails did fine. The starfish, you might need to wait a little while on.

yeah i did take the damsel i put the 2 clowns i got in and they seem to be doing just fine. I was kinda waiting for more replys on that clean up crew question just because u said u didnt know if it was a good idea to add when its cycling. Also with the crabs eat all of the excess food off of the sand bed or should i get a bottom feeding fish to take care of that?

im looking for ideas on my next fish im thinking maybe a foxface?

if you are thinking about a foxface I would suggest reading these two threads and maybe a few more before making a decision.

Foxface Rabbitfish a Bad Idea??

after reading those threads about the foxface i kinda picked up that some pick on crabs and some dont the only real thing i would worry about is how big it can get. I dont have corals so im not worried about that.......if not a foxface what kinda of fish should i look at adding next? Would a tang or a huma humua trigger be ok?

i have read some about these 2 fish just not alot.......again i have a 55 gallon tank fish only with live rock

If you get sand sifting gobies(like the diamond goby). They do a very good job at keeping the sand looking nice and clean. They pretty much eat all your live critters out of the sand. Kinda eliminating the word live in sand. There are a lot of good snails to keep your sand stirred and lokking nice though.

What are you looking for in a fish? A purpose such as algae control er something like that, a personality or certain colors?

I wouldn't get a trigger to aggresive. I have a 55gal and this is what i have:
1 blue tang, 1 yellow tang, 1 Scooter Blenny, 3 clownfish, 1 orange spotted sleeper goby, 1 Bicolor Anthias, lots of hermit crabs and snails, 1 gold elegant star, and 1 purple Tamarisk star.

I want a very peaceful tank with lots of different colors i put together a list of possible fish just now let me know what you think:

2 or 3 blue/green reef chromis
1 blue tang (paracanthurus hepatus)
1 Auriga Butterflyfish (chaetodon auriga)
1 Heniochus Black and White Butterflyfish
1 Clown Goby, Citrinis
1 Bicolor Psuedochromis

these are all fish that i looked at that seemed to be colorful and were still labeled as peaceful except for the bicolor psuedochromis which i really want so do u think it will be ok? i know the butterflyfish will pick at the rock but im not worried about that. I am not planning on gettin them all at the same time or even getting them all, its just a list of possibles.

let me know what you think. thanks

bicolor pseudochromis can be a bit territorial, the butterfly and the Heniochus require a mature and stable tank and are not safe for corals or anemones if you decide to add them later. I really like the clown goby, I'm thinking of getting one also. 3 blue/green reef chromis would be a good choice, always an odd number when getting a group of the same species, and the blue tang is a good choice, make sure to provide lots of "Seaweed Selects" green marine algae, they are big time grazers.

If you're looking for a hardy not so expensive fish I would go with a small school of chromis.

yes i also think chromis is a good fish. but your damsels.....i would remove them. they are so territiorial it makes me sick. like my old freshwater chiclids. i always wondered why they sold damsels so cheap! i think damsels are very attractive fish but are way too aggressive. a bullying fish can cause major stress on any fish present.

i suspect what would happen if you were to get a clownfish. the damsel would beat the **** out of him. the clown would never be at home. i think the only way to keep a damsel effectively would be to have a large tank 125 gal and up. or get a school of 10 or more. they are not as aggresive when placed in schools i would think(but dont quote me on that)

jay,

I have a firefish (or fire dartfish) and he is a great addition. Very calm and likes to poke in and out of his home cave area. Hes a fairly active guy and has great coloring.

This fish fit right in to the tank social scene.
