My experience with melafix was in a FW setup. I had an oscar infected with body slime and some sort of open wound. I treated him with the melafix in the aquarium he lives in to this day and the oscar is doing fine. The tank on the other hand has a constant greenish tinge to the water no matter what's done to it.

What is wrong with your fish? I'm sure we can figure out what your best approach to the problem is but until then I'd say don't use it.

Melafix is "Australian Tea Tree Oil". AKA Melaleuca Tree extract, also called cajeput oil. As far as I know it is not harmfull to the Biological bed. I have used it in my Saltwater quaranteen tank several times with good sucess, but I would not put it in my display tank. There are too many variables in a display tank to dose with any kind of medication.

Even though Melafix says "reef safe", I do not believe studies were ever conducted on ever kind of reef setup, with every kind of invertabrate/Coral/Fish/Plant that exists in various home aquariums.

Melafix might help your situation out but until you get a few more thumbs ups for it I'd just remove him to a q tank for now and keep an eye on him.......if that's possible.

maybe

I have a yellow tang that got hexamita as a secondary infection due to his lateral line. I got these pills that were sapposed to cure him but the problem was had to eat it there for i had to put it on his food. But he was so far along in his suckness that he had stoped eating, and the little that he did eat seemed to have not affect. as he got worse i stoped spraying his food in hopes that he would at least eat a little more food because he was the skinnest i had ever seen a tang, but he still seemed un able to eat, i thought he would die for sure. I started using melafix and not only did the infection get better but he started eating again. I would use melafix because even if it doesnt cure the infection directly it might make him healthy enough to do it on his own or make you baths more sucssesful. Do not quote me on that because i am only talking about one time with one fish, but i would at least try it.

Melafix and Protein Skimmer...

Never run a protein skimmer with MelaFix. I did that once. The melafix apparently increases the foaming ability of the skimer by a factor of 1000, I had foam pouring out of the skimmer and onto the floor. Think of running your dishwasher with Liquid dish soap instead of the dishwasher powder.
