So far everything I've bought has been from LFS. But the livestock available is limited. Considering ordering from online suppliers in the future.
LFS I use:
Aquarium World
Village Tropical Fish
I used to get most of my livestock at the LFS as well but switched to online vendors couple of years ago. You can check our sponsors page for some online vendors, it is the link at the top of the page -"sponsors".Originally Posted by jbicb3
The reason I switched was becouse of the limitations in variety of animals, corals mostly. I still prefer buying fish at the local store as I can see the fish in person and ask clerk to feed it or just simply observe its behavior.
When ordering online, you have to make sure that your order justifies shipping charges so you don't order a 10 dollar frag and pay 35 dollars for shipping.![]()
Kind regards,
Gene.

Corals I get from a variety of sources. LFS, online vendors, fellow reefers, furtive roundevous in parking lots. Fish I prefer to get locally, but my cardinals I had to order online after my LFS could not get any for months. I will probably have to go the online route for pyramid butterflies, since I have only ever seen one in a LFS.
Get mine from the LFS The Shark Reef in Silverdale, WA
very happy with the stuff and the service

I occasionally buy mine from the LFS, but they do not have near the selection that the online markets have, and they don't appear to be as healthy (here anyway). I use liveaquaria.com and saltwaterfish.com. I have had success with both of these, but I am willing to try another place if it is reasonable enough. The shipping cost on one fish is terrible!

I voted Online simply for the selection of captive raised stoneys. I know the poll was for livestock but you can't beet the selection and price on drygoods online either!![]()
I caught my French Angel, my Hi-Hat, and my snails and hermits myself. Living close to the water definitely has benefits! I bought my Lawnmower Blenny at the LFS (Splash Landing in Jupiter, FL)
29-gallon tank, wet/dry filter, 2100 Rio for return, 3 145-160 gph powerheads for circulation, 25 lbs. LR, crushed coral substrate, 1 T-12 20-watt magtinic, 1 T-12 20-watt actinic white, 1 T-12 20-watt nutri-grow, 1 T-12 20-watt aquasun, 1 lawnmower blenny
my lfs doesnt carry marine fish, so to the ocean i go!
better to catch them yourself than pay someone else to! (much better variety too!)
I buy all my fish and corals at a LFS, when they ACTUALLY have something in stock!!! All my critters come from online sources, like reeftopia. I buy snails and such about once a year and split the cost with a friend, that way we get the free shipping and a TON O SNAILS for cheap!
I have of corse not bought anything yet but this thread is very interesting as i hope to soon. which way dose everybody think a nooby should go.
I haven't purchased any corals yet (except a piece of LR that had some buttons on it). But I think I would prefer to purchase all my livestock at a local store so I can see for myself the color and condition of the coral or the health and personality of the fish.
As far as drygoods, I have made purchases from local shops, online shops and eBay. The shipping charges for online purchases often consume the savings over purchasing locally, so I would prefer to give my business to my local merchants unless the item is a specialty or not availble locally.
Lfs.. I Tried Mail Order Once... Didnt Work Out For Me...
I am not a failure! I have just found 10,000 ways to do it wrong!

Kevin is the sole live stock contributor to my tank... and I always recieve healthy animals....
On that note, buying from the LFS allows you to view the animals condition prior to the purchase....
