UV Sterilizer for FOWLR?

I'm in the process of setting up a 200g FOWLR tank with a 70g sump and would like to hear from some of you experienced people regarding the use of a UV sterilizer. Should I implement one or not, and why? Please advise.

Hi knarf,

I would not bother with a UV Sterilizer and focus my efforts on better husbandry. The UV's can be very effective at killing free-floating algae, bacteria and anything else that flows through them, even things that we may like to have in our water column (live food from refugia, etc.). If your looking to a UV to help guard against parasites, proper quarantine is a better option.

Thanks Scott,

I appreciate your input. I've heard this same advise before and the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. Don't try to fix the problem once you have it, try to prevent it in the first place. What equipment should I run in the quarantine tank? How should I set it up or maintane it?

Frank.

Quarentine tanks can be set up using very basic equipment. A small standard aquarium with a powerfilter of sorts, a heater, a NO light strip, some water movement and that's got it covered. Within the tank you should use some artificial shelter, some people use PVC just to provide new fish a place to hide. Mix up some new saltwater and you've got yourself a Q tank.
