Question heniochus-bannerfish butterflys

I have been reading (lurking) this forum for some time now and don't recall seeing any info on the bannerfish butterfly. (heniochus) The book I have says that they are hardy and friendly. Can anyone tell me more about them? Will they do well in FO?
Tks TJ

cha ching - someone else that is interested in the bannerfish. I am looking to stock my 90 with 2 of the long fin banner fish - the yellow and white variety. From what I have read and heard they are very hardy for tanks and make a great addition.

Problem is finding them for sale. One LFS had 2 of the brown and white heniochus for sale but no yellow and white heniochus.

Anyone else have any thoughts as well?

thanks from me as well...

HI Nuccracker,
Yellow and white? The ones that I ordered are the heniochus acuminatus and they are black and white stripes with yellow on their backs...Is this the one?

That's what I meant - trying to do 2 things at the same time - HUGE procrastinator here.

The difference between the black and whites and the brown and whites is that the black and whites have a longer fin on top (not sure of its proper name )

Where were you able to order them from?

I ordered them from local lfs. They are supposedly seasonal fish. Last week when I was in there, 3 were in the tanks. Apparently they sold over the weekend.

ya my local LFS has 2 of the brown and white ones but I'm holding out for the black and whites - more color and I just think they are nicer looking. Going to stop in on R with my boss to the LFS if we end up in the area to see if they got their order in..

I had one for over a year and a half, but the poor guy died from an ick infestation in the tank. I now have a second one. They are very hardy (if you don't count ick), personable, communal, easy to feed, and just an all around cool fish.

BTW... I have the black and white Heni, not the brown.

Also..

I've had no luck introducing a second Heni into a tank with one in it already. Even with 2 introduced at the same time might prove to be detrimental after they take up residency. (from competition)

I had a brown/yellow Heni (I think they may get larger than the black/yellow ones). He and my first powder blue tang were the first "real" fish to go into the tank after cycling. Of course tangs and betterflies should never be introduced into an immature system, especially a fish-only with dead coral. But I was stupid at the time and followed the advice of the lfs.

Anyway, the Heni and the tang were the best of buddies, and the butterfly was just a nice fish. Then the damsels started WW3, and I accidently poisoned the tank with weather stripping I'd used on a tank divider. Some of the fish died quickly (longnose butterfly died almost immediately), but Heni lived for another month, barely eating and had cloudy eyes. He looked so beat up like a war refugee, and actually toward the end started looking better and we thought he might make it.

I think they are one of the easier butterflies to keep. Hope you can find a pair to put in at the same time.

That reminds me--I did see my heni picking parasites off the other fish on occasion. Usually the tang, since they were buds. At the time I didn't know that was appropriate heni behavior and shocked me the first few times I saw him do it. And yes, the picture on the above site does not do them justice. They are quite lovely and graceful.

I've seen my heni pick at the powder brown tang's gills too!!

A little "housekeeping"

They seem to be good buddies, too!

Well I added 2 3-4 inchers today. They seem to be getting along fine with the yellow tang and magenta dottyback. At first, tang was trying to stab them with his tang and then the dottyback kept harassing. I rearranged the tank and they all seem to be doing well. I really enjoy the heni's. I use to have a lot of freshwater angels before I started this sw tank.

The guy at lfs said the heni's sell out fast.
