skimmer questions

I recently added a HO protein skimmer, about 3 weeks ago.

I currently have five small chromis and a kole tang along with about 10 astrea snails.

My skimmer does not appear to pulling out too much "gunk." I also get a lot of water -- mostly water -- in the collection cup. The water looks pretty nasty -- like stagnant pond water. But not a lot of actual skimmate.

Is my bioload just too small to be pulling much gunk out? It's a 100 gal. tank.

Perhaps you need to adjust the skimmer so that it produces drier skimmate? What brand/model of hang-on skimmer do you have?

It's a CPR remora pro. I've tried adjusting it up and down. Is there a general rule when adjusting? Like moving down results in wetter material while going up dries it out?

Same issue

I have an AquaC Remora skimmer on a 75 gallon tank. The tank is 3 weeks old and has a yellow tang, damsel and two clowns - plus about 80 pounds of live rock. I get about a quarter inch of green tea like substance every day. I was expecting more. I don't even think the Remora is adjustable (other than the height of the output tray).

If you figure anything out, please let me know. Thanks!

I get the same thing in my cup, a nasty water that I just clean out ever few days. I've adjusted the skimmer to the point that only the big bubbles overflow into the cub. The bubles eventually end up as the nasty water. Seems to be working just fine. The water is so nasty I need a hard brush to get the crap out of the cup, otherwise it just sticks to the sides.

I'll ask Scott (Reefland) about that because I believe he used to own one of those. I'm using a Lifereef skimmer and I could tell you how to adjust it but that's about it.

Let's see what he has to say. I'll send him a link to this thread.

I used to run an Urchin pro and it had an adjustable collection cup. Lowering the cup would provide a more wet skimmate, raising it would produce a drier skimmate. If you are not collecting anything, I would make sure that the skimmer is foaming (that the injector hasn't clogged) and if so, lower the cup to get some skimmate.

Yeah, there is definitely foam being produced. There just doesn't seem to be a whole lot of it.

When I first added the skimmer, during the break in period, it was producing a ton of foam. It seems to have calmed down now. The cup is getting some foam and skimmate, I was just expecting more. Just about everything I've read here says people get about a cup every other day.

Does the bioload have anything to do with anything?
