Turn off Pump while feeding fish

What is the thinking on turning off your system when feeding? I have noticed that a good portion of the flake food I put in my tank immediately goes into the overflow and I guess (hope) it gets caught in the mechanical filter. Should I turn off the filter when I feed?

Thanks.

I always turn off pumps and skimmer when I feed. Keeps my skimmer from flooding and gives my little buddies ample time to stuff themselves.

I had the same problem but I saw what was called a "feeding circle" at the store which is exactly what it sounds like. A suction cup secures it to the side of the tank and you drop the flakes into the circle. The flakes don't fall down at the same time and the circle keeps them from floating on the surface into the overflow. All the fish seemed to have gotten the idea and it works well for me. Just an idea.

I soak my flake food in a cup of tankwater for several minutes before adding it to the tank. Very little goes over the overflow.

I have fed both ways -- pump on or pump off -- but mostly I go with the pump on. Sometimes I do turn off the skimmer for about 30 minutes but not always.
