Setting up a new FOWLR tanks - advice needed
Hey guys.....
I am setting up a new FOWLR tank for a friend. He has an existing Tangangyika Cichlid freshwater tank - 120cm long x 50cm wide x 80cm deep that will be converted. It has about 3 inches of medium fine sand in the bottom and is lit by an orbit 4x65 wat power compacts. He has a spare 2 x 20,000K 2 tube fluorescent also that can be incorporated. How much light?
What I was thinking to do is add oolitic aragonite to the exisiting sand as hes not to keen to throw the other sand out - building the bed to 7 - 8 inches deep.
He has some existing pumice type rock he wants utilsed too (about 15 peices of roughly 2 -3 kilograms each... Can I use some as base rock with say an equal amount of live rock?
Also to kick it over a little quicker, what say you guys to the idea of half filling the new tank with water from a large established reef tank he has. This might help it cycle faster right? Adding fish - how soon with at FOWLR? Is it the same process as a reef? What do you guys think regarding adding one bomb proof fish to get things rolling?
I havent set up a FOWLR before, but I assume it's much the same as a reef... I would like your opinions
