The easiest marine fish to breed are clownfish; however, none of the saltwater fish are as easy to breed as most freshwater ornamentals.
It is not possible to breed any of the marine fish cheaper than the commercial breeders. Hobbyists who breed fish (almost all are breeding clownfish) do so for the fun of it, not for profit.

Banggai Cardinalfish
I might have to disagree. I have a pair of clownfish and a pair of Banggai Cardinalfish. In the year that I have had both pairs, the Cardinal Fish have bred 8 times giving me a total of 45 Baby Fish. The Clownfish are just now starting to act like they want to breed.
The Banggai are not colorfull, but they breed like no other fish I've ever seen. I call them the guppies of the sea they breed so much and so often. Meric

if your in it for the fun, I acclimated molies to salt water and they bred nonstop. The nice thing is that they are livebearers and the fry was easy to take care of. They also made good live food for my other salt fish.
just keep 1 male with about 2-3 females

OK, I forgot about Banggai Cardinalfish. Yes, they are much easier to breed than any of the clownfish.

Awesome I was looking at a few cardinals today at the LFS and really didn't think that they were so freaky as the clowns. The one fish that I do want to bread someday is flame angels or maybe Manderins. Like I said my partner and I will have about 6 tanks that we can use to bread fish with 2 tanks for clownfish of what ever type that we decide on. 2 tanks for maybe cardinals and 2 tanks for ?. The ? is where we are now because we know we want something else to try and breed since most people are doing clowns we want to go one step farther.

Flame angels were first bred successfully about two years ago by this company: http://www.blackpearlsinc.com/2_7.shtml
Mandarinfish have not yet been bred in captivity.

I would have to say A. Oscellaris are the easiest species to breed only because the fry are more developed when they are born than in cardinals and are a little bit easier to feed as a result usually cultured rotifers work really good the only draw back about salt water fry is that they need to eat constantly throughout the day I have had ocellaris fry for about 2 years they need really high water quality and need to eat constantly throughout the day in my experience feeding is where most people go wrong they do not feed enough to the fry water must also be changed once a day about 1% THIS WILL NOT HURT FRY because they swim at the upper layers of the breeding tanks and you sypon the substrate at the bottom to remove uneaten rotifers so they don't foul the water. give them lots of cover also. fake plants work really well. that's pretty much it. use gravity to circulate your tanks also fry can't handle to much flow they will get sucked up into filters trust me learned this the hard way.
poor lil baby nemos. I have seen flame angels spawn before but because they are egg scatterers the eggs were eaten by other tank mates. |
