Welcome to Reefland! ![]() I would say a dirty filter is one that elevates the nitrates, nitrites and ammonia levels in your tank.... By the way, what type of filter and what type of tank do you have? Fish only, or reef? Also what inhabitants do you have in there?

What are you trying to get at? What kind of filter do you have, since most show OBVIOUS signs of needing to be cleaned!
