Chances are the fish had ick at the LFS. When you brought it home the ick just became more noticable and effected the rest of the fish....... Be sure to quarantine any future fish before you add them to your display tank.....

I am feeding the fishes with garlic . I pounded garlic to extract the juices and mixed it with brine shrimp . Do i need to soaked the food for long before feeding ? I heard that feeding fishes with garlic will improve the fish immune system against diseases ...
Also could will stress lead to ick ? Thankyou . |

I have also heard the garlic helps with the immune system. The problem here is that you will need to treat for ICK. Is your tank a fish only tank or do you have inverets as well. If there are inverts involved you will need to remove the fish and treat them in a different tank.....

Arghhh ... my blue tang is gone ..... : (
my tank is a mixture of inverts and some leather corals . I noticed something very unusual , the black poma i am talking about , the culprit of ick , in the day time there is ick on fish body , but at night all is gone , but the next morning it is back ... I still cannot catch the fish out due to rock works ... however i m performing water change every 2 day 10% . if i managed to remove the fish , do i need to perform a 100% water change to ensure things are okie ? or can i just add in new fishes ? |

Well I am no expert on ICK so I was hoping someone else would chime in. I know for the inverts sake ou will need to remove the fish to another tank in order to treat the infection. This my require the temporary removal of the live rock. I know it sucks. I had to remove some damsels and it required ever piece to be removed.
I am not sure if the ICK will survive in the tank without a host.

ICK - hands down. I had a hippo tang (before the tomini) that had a severe outbreak last year. I had to take the entire scape down to get the fish into a quarantine tank. ALL made it but hte hippo. And I heard the hippo tangs are prone to it.
Garlic helps - as a preventative. But, keep in mind, once you get rid of ich, don't put the fish back into your show tank just yet. Give it an extra week. Ich has a life cycle that has to be completed to ensure that all is gone. The white spots on the fish that you see cannot be killed. The ich (white spots) have to reach the next stage and that is to fall off the fish and into the water. THAT is when you get them. Seperate tank - no rock, no corals. Depending on what your tank is set at, set your 'hospital' tank to low 80s (say 83). Treat the tank with ich treatment (blue, rid ich, etc). Dose according to bottle instructions. Do your water changes. 25% every other day. (and yes, daily in this case is not a bad idea as you'll be replacing more meds in the isolation tank). Give it a week AFTER you see your last spot. Then consider putting fish back. Good luck |

What fish do you have left? I recommend you get a 15 G quarantine tank and treat with formalin. Please follow the dosing instructions EXACTLY. It is much easier to use than copper. Rebecca |

Hi all , I have standby a 2-feet tank for QT . just mixed the salt ...
Awww .... the thoughts of climbing up ladder and remove the LR is already killing me ... I hope i can do that .. I have about 40-50kg of LR in there ... OMG !!! i really hate to move the rocks to get the fish .... I have left 2 maroons , i common clown , yellow tang ,few damsels , shrimps , cukes , snails , and the culprit black poma in the tank. . . At the moment i am treating the fishes with garlic soaked foods .. the yellow tang seems to be doing well after that .. but i know that is not a cure but rather prevention ... Rebecca , may i is the brand of medication call formalin ? thks M |

Formalin is a chemical, not a brand. It comes (at least how I buy it...) in small bottles of liquid. You drip drops (if that makes sense...) directly into your Q-tank. Bottles are small and you should be able to find it with all the meds in your local fish store. Follow directions on the package re: dosing (X drops per gallon -- definitely don't put more than required, thinking "more is better") and leave your fish in there for 3 weeks AFTER the last one shows any spots (ANY) of ich. Then put them back in the display. To remove the meds from the display tank, run some polyfilter (this is a brand, it is made by Biomarine) through the filter path. The polyfilter will turn from white to brownish when it has removed all the meds. Just throw it out. Here's soemthing that has worked for me whenever I have had to catch fish from amongst the rockwork: First of all, drain all the water out of your system except for about 3 inches. It's not going to kill your rock to be exposed to air for a bit. You have less space to chace the fish in then.. I put mine in one of those big 25 G rubermaid tubs you get at Home Depot or Lowe's (they are CHEAP). When you have caught the fish, just return the water. Good Luck! Rebecca |
