Lightbulb Powerheads.. A must have???

Hiya Guys..

The use of a powerhead in my FOWLR saved all my fish. I am not sure if it's the powerhead pushing water and giving the surface of the water a current or if it was the venturi on my powerhead.

I lost one fish, and the rest were breathing heavy. I just took an airstone out of the tank the night before. I turned a powerhead on, and laid the venturi system out of the water causing millions of tiny bubbles to spew out of the powerhead.

After I took the airstone out, and before I turned the PH on, the surface of the tank was as smooth as glass. Were my fish saved because of the powerhead, or were they saved because of the venturi system? Should I turn the air stone back on?

Thanks!

Hi there chris. You actually answered your own question. A powerhead that is pointed towards the surface helps in gas exchange and better oxygen content. I've heard that airstones are only good for visual effect and they have no affect in saltwater. You be the judge. Good luck.

Chris,

What size tank do you have? Are you using a sump? If the powerhead is your only source of water movement, then it is a MUST HAVE. As has already been stated, keeping the surface agitated is the best means of oxygen exchange (and really the only means on a sumpless/skimmerless system).

It also gives the fish a little more excercise with the constant water movement.
