When you acclimate a fish, there are about 10 different ways of doing it. You should first acclimate the fish to the water tempature by floating the bag in the aquarium for 20 - 30 minutes. Every 5 min. or so, put 1/2 - 3/4 of a cup of water from your aquarium into the bag for 20 min. When doing this, you should turn off the lights on your aquarium so you don't stress the fish out. This is the way I acclimate my fish and its always worked sucessfully.

I think Jon gave a good method. Personally I don't worry about the lights unless its a fish that I consider somewhat sensitive (like anthias, some tangs, angels).
