Feeding Live Brine Shrimp

Hola --

We have questions about live brine shrimp. We've read that this is what we can add to our feeding schedule for our sleeper banded goby. He sifts the sand, but we don't think he is getting enough nutrition from that -- he looks thinner than when we got him.

Do most LFS sell live brine shrimp or is this something we would need to hatch? And, once we have them, what's the best way to put them in the tank -- just dumping them in or using an implement like a turkey baster?

Thank you so much!

your lfs should have it, and yes you can just add it to the tank its self i always use a real fine fish net because you don't want to add the water the live brine came in with you have to strain them first. get a small amount, enough to see what happens when you add it to the tank, if the goby eats it then you are ok if not try again later or the next day and if he still don't eat it then i would go with adding more pods to the tank.

If he doesn't eat brine shrimp don't dispair. Their is a large variety of meaty foods on the market such as the formula 1 frozen cubes that you can try. It is a good idea to feed your fish a healthy mixture of different foods. Let us know how things go..... Good Luck!

I can tell you that personally I have enjoyed hatching the brine shrimp myself. There are many easy, innexpensive plans for doing so, and the eggs are cheap too. I just use a simple air pump and mason jar technique. My clownfish loves it. I suck 'em out of the jar carefully with a turkey baster, rinse with a little tap water in a brine shrimp net, and add them to the tank. Getting them down to where the goby hangs out may be a challenge. If so, the frozen cubes may be more practical.

Have fun!

It worked!! Thanks

Thank you.. thank you... thank you for everyones help. I just got back from the LFS where I got a "bag-o-brine" The goby (not to mention just about everything else) loves the live brine. This is the first thing I've seen him eat in 2-3 days. Thanks again for your help.

It's amazing how they seem to love the "live" stuff better.
