PH and buffering.
If I add a buffer to water is the PH supposed to go up or down?

Neither. It buffers alkalinity. Alkalinity at proper levels resists the normal downward drift of pH. If your alk was low, that would lead to low pH and a buffer could help with your pH level. However, if your alkalinity is at the correct level and your pH is low, there are a number of things to look at. CO2 comes to mind.

When I add buffer to my tank the PH meter goes up a couple points and then drops back down a bit after the water stablizes. However, the PH does remain a point or so higher after it has settled. So I do notice a direct corelation between the two. As Curt said there are other factors involved as well.
