quarentine tank questions
Okay, I know I really need one, but I don't have the money, or really the room for much. What is the bare minimum..... I am not really adding new fish at this time, so this would really just be for sick fish. DO I have to have a filter on the quarintine tank, or can I control it with water changes? I know I need to have a heater and thermomometer, but I am trying to keep cost down..... do I have to use an actual tank, or will something like a 5 gallon bucket work?
thanks! |

I suppose a bucket would be fine, it would just be hard to see the fish. If you had to go BARE minimum, Heater, Therm, and a small powerhead, or even air pump with a stone. Just keep the water moving.
Yes you could control thru water changes, but then you are removing the medication too. A small "quick filter" from hagen a small 201 powerhead, and a handful of Sand from the tank would be ideal. I would guess total cost should come in around $50 or so. |

Hey Mike,I would go bare bottom... Is there a reason for the sand?

A quarantine tank can be had very cheapily, but I would be sure to include a cycled biological filter,

Just wanted to introduce some beneficial bacteria to the bucket. Just in case the NH3 and NO2 start to creep up. Granted that sand has to be disposed of after use...

If you can get your hands on a used sponge filter, this will work to provide some bacteria. I got one from my LFS to start my QT. As for the cheap QT, try Rubbermaid. Rubbermaid tubs make great QT tanks for low cost. I would go with no sand, bare bottom. Maybe a couple of PVC pipes for the fish to hide in and that is it. You will need the bio filter though. The small Bio Wheel filters work well for this, however if you are medicating, don't use the carbon filter cartriges, just filter floss.
