this is not good!!!

My puffer has been batteling mild ich spots for the last two weeks or so, it hasn't seemed to bother him, just a few spots on his fins, so I have been soaking his food in garlic, did 2 water changes, and used melafix in the tank. This morning I got up and he looks TERRIBLE! Barely moving and spots everywhere. I don't have a real quarentine tank due to finances, so this morning I put him in the water change bucker with some decorations from the display tank and a heater and air stone.... I medicated him with the rid-ich, which has malachite green, but I am scared to death that he won't make it. He is my favorite (an most expensive) fish, I am so attached to him. ANy advice would be appriciated!

Have plenty of water ready to change out the water in that bucket to try to keep it fresh. I'm not sure there is much more you can do for the fish except for crossing your fingers.

The rescue of one or two fish, depending on their cost, would pay for a quarantine setup. You can't afford not to QT new fish. My quarantine tank for a long time was a 20 gallon long tank that someone gave me. The only cost was a heater and a small filter. I didn't even have a light on it. The room lights were sufficient.
