Question Clown Swimmin Funny????

Hey Guys and Gals,

I've got a black clown that's swimming upside down at times,Looks like the tail won't move and it's really wierd. The clown will swim head down and upside down literally.I've got a smaller clown that seams to snuggle up to it so to speak, but I haven't a clue?????Is it sick/knocked up or what???No new fish, no new animals at all and I've had it better than a year.Water is ok.I've had clownfish for about 4 years and nothing like this has ever come up.I've just fed and the fish is eating normally and even chasing another clownfish, upside down!!!Looks a bit puffy or just fat???

Any Ideas????

Marc

I don't think that's the problem I've fed them less in the last month if anything. They have a great amount of forage, brine shrimp. Thanks for the reply, that was a good suggestion.

It sounds like swim bladder problems. Most of the info available on the net is about swim bladder disease in goldfish. However, since marine fish have swim bladders also, it is not unexpected that disease of this organ can occur in marine fish also. I found this explanation, and I'll keep searching for something more specific to marine fish....

The swim bladder is the organ which allows a fish to stay at any level in the aquarium without sinking or floating. The swim bladder may fail from damage by bacteria, parasites, genetic faults, or blows and/or bruises. When the swim bladder fails to function the fish loses it's ability to swim normally and may swim sideways or even upside down. Once damaged, the bladder does not usually return to normal functioning, but if the fish can eat and swim without too much strain it can live for years with the condition. Goldfish seem particularly prone to swim bladder problems. Without knowing the exact cause of the malfunction, treatment is difficult.

Marine fish in Singapore fish farms are noted to have swim bladder problems, but no real identified cause has been identified. Without knowing the cause, it's impossible to guess the right treatment (if indeed there is a treatment). http://www.fao.org/docrep/field/003/AB705E/AB705E08.htm see paragraphs 1.2.f. and 2.1.5.18. Good luck.

One of the LFS's here had a yellow tang for a long time with swim bladder problems. His name was Scooter, since he drug (dragged?) his butt on the bottom of the tank. He is alive and well, but still scooting in someone's tank - someone thought he was cute and took him home.

Thats weird my clown is doing the same thing - he is swimming either upside down or sideways at the very top of the tank. He eats fine and will play with the other clown occasionally. He is very new to the tank, I just got him a few days ago. I am hoping it is just stress, I hope it is not swim bladder disease
