What is your alkalinity?

What type of lighting do you have over the tank and do you have a refugium connected to the system? If you have a refugium you should have its lights on opposite the main display. This will help to stablize the PH.

And what Scott said....... That will play a major role.....

Let's start with some lab basics when your test result isn't what you expect:
1. How are you measuring your pH? Colorimetric tests? pH probe? Dipstick? Have your cross-checked your result or recalibrated your probe?
OK... now if your pH isn't accurate, start over and get an accurate pH reading.

2. If your pH is accurate, then the next step is to test your alkalinity.
What is your alkalinity (and if it's not what you expect, did you verify the results)?

OK, now that we're sure you have accurate results,

if your pH is 7.8 and your alkalinity is low, buffer will help bring up your pH - so add buffer. Follow the directions on the bottle.

if your pH is 7.8 and your alkalinity is normal to high, try ventilating your tank (disolved carbon dioxide is high). This is a situation where you shouldn't go crazy chasing the "proper number" on the lab test... how does your tank look? If everything is doing ok, then the pH is probably just fine.

Other possibilities: if you run a calcium reactor, lower pH is expected and usually isn't a problem

Good luck.

Hmmm... now that the tank is full, I could convert the pool to saltwater...

I would also try to get those nitrates down. Should ideally be 0. Are you using bio-balls in a wet-dry system? This could be a potential nuisance algae problem.
