Question about snails and dsb

Hello guys,

I have a deep sandbed of about 4 inches in my 55 gallon tank and was wondering if nassarius snails would crash the tank since they burrow and all. I was thinking of getting a 100 of those snails .Would that be to much?

But would they really mess up my tank's bacteria in my sandbed if all they do is stir it up?

I don't believe Nassarius snails will crash your tank by burrying in the sand bed, however, 100 of them in the 55g tank is way too high of a number. I wouldn't add any more than 5-6 of them. They usually burried in the upper most layer of sand and have their siphon extending into the water. This snails feed on carrion/scavengers and 5-6 of them, or even 10 wouldn't hurt your DSB at all.
More information about them and their benefits for aquarium could be found
here.

Agreed where did that number come from, that is WAY WAY to many Nassarious snails. I need to replenish my supply, and was thinking 10 for my 90!

With 100 snails in that 55, you might not be able to see that DSB.

Be sure to get the true Nassarius and not the Ilyanassa that are sold on eBay. And, I agree, I would add no more than 6 and they are good for your DSB.

35 is still too many and I will quote Steven's post to validate the importance.

I would get like 40 in a 300. Your suppose to have 1 snail per gallon. Doesn't really matter which type as long as its balanced

Stocking should be based on the feeding habits of the snails and the amount of food available for them, not on a poorly conceived rule of thumb that ignores the biology of the snails.

Like the others have pointed out there is usually very little food for Nassarius in most people's tanks. The recommendation of no more than 5-6 is a good one. It doesn't make sense to buy more snails than your tank can support. Not only are you wasting money, but you're also adding more biomass to rot in the tank.

IMHO, any "quantity per gallon" rule is a poor one and usually ignores every other aspect of a tank except for the volume. There is more, biologically, going on in your fishtank than the rest of your home combined, and simplifying something that complex into a silly little rule is beyond any sort of conceivable logic.
