I have a sick Tomato Clown in my tank. His affected area is in the back half of him. It is not ick. No white spots. It also appears not to be a fungus (cotton like). He is semi-white in the affected area. All he does is lay on the bottom of the tank. Acts as if his tail fin doesn't aid in swimming. I have began treating with a 1/2 dose of recommened MelaFix antibacterial remedy. I also purchased some dried seaweed and soaked in minced garlic. I have also added Polyaqua fish protector. Please Help!!! Hurry does not look good for him.

Can you tell if it is white-grayish material?
If it is a fungul infection (cotton like) I would try Maroxy by Mardel - I like their products they helped my sick clown. But if it is a bacterial infection then you could consider Maracyn by Mardel. I am new at this though I just know what helped my fish in my limited experience. Last edited by jckjohn; 03-02-2006 at 06:35 PM. |

To late my tomato clown died. He was a goner anyway. BUT my T.P. Clown also died was fine when I left for work no sign of anything 2.5 hrs. later my wife texted me any said he also died. Came home at break and did an emergency water change (25%). Came home now 6 hrs later and my other 4 fish are fine. Could my other clown die from the garlic that I soaked the seaweed in???????????? Remember I was using Melafix so I had the carbon filters out of the filter. Water smelled like garlic bad. No amonia, nitrate, or nitrite in the tank, did a check before water change.

Sorry to hear that the fish died. I just want to note that is you treat your fish with any medication, NEVER do it in the display tank. Move the fish to a temporary tank and perform any treatment.

I agree reefland, I learned my lesson treating in the display tank. Plus the meds are so much cheaper since you are using a smaller hospital tank mine is 10 gallon.

Garlic won't hurt your other fish.
It is important to try to identify what specific disease your fish have. Protozoans, bacteria, and fungi all have different treatments. Fungal infections won't respond to "regular" antibiotics (that do work on bacteria). Mixing of antibiotics can also neutralize them (since different antibiotics work through different mechanisms - some stunt growth, others are depend on the growth cycle for the antibiotic to work). Garlic never hurts. It may not help. But it doesn't hurt (in reasonable quantities).
