    Raising ph in Quarantine

I am continuing a hypo salinity treatment in my quarantine tank, and noticed my ph levels are low (7.8 in the afternoon)... My fault entirely. I was so involved in lowering the sg, that I forgot the ph would probably be affected. Yutz!

Anyway, I have a reef buffer, but I'm hesitant to use it in the 10 g. The instructions read: Dissolve 1 teaspoon of ReefPure Marine ph Buffer per 50 gallons of true water volume in about 1 cup of aquarium water. Mix and slowly add to sump or into strong water current.

I have neither sump or strong current, and I don't want to burn the seahorses; can I mix baking soda in with ro/di and salt water and add this to the tank to raise the ph?

The reef buffer is mostly baking soda anyway... one trick we use in the science lab to get small amounts is to make a solution and use part of it: dissolve 1 teaspoon in 1¼ cups of aquarium water... then add ¼ cup of the mixed solution. If you are concerned about adding it too fast, use an eye dropper.

Hmmm... now that the tank is full, I could convert the pool to saltwater...

    Thanks Bubba!

After a lengthy and serious contemplation of the reef buffer versus baking soda (I so need a life.) I opted to go with the baking soda. I figured if I could use it to brush my teeth, counter indigestion, and soothe bee-stings, it probably wouldn't hurt the horsies... uh, hippocampus reidis.

I've been mixing it in with waterchanges, and it seems to be working. Ph is back up, and I don't have to worry about the seahorses snicking their food too fast and getting indigestion.
