hypo with hydrometer

I have ick on my tang and I would like to do hypo but I only have a hydrometer. I have priced a refractometer and can't afford one right now. How dangerous is it to just use th hydrometer? Would doing a copper treatment be better? I hate meds

I would not use a hydrometer, but then again I wouldn't use one for my display either. Accuracy tests have been performed on hydrometers with results showing as great as a 0.004 difference. Treating with copper requires a copper kit and although cheaper than a $40 refractometer, I would spend my money on the refractometer.

Too late for me I guess... I used a hydrometer on my Q-tank with a pair of percula clowns. It's been about 5 weeks with no problems whatsoever until yesterday. Although probably not due to the salt level, the female has been acting funny. The intake on the filter became clogged which stopped the flow of water overnight. The following morning I found the female laying motionless on the bottom. After rinsing the sponge and doing a small water change she appeared fine by midday. Again this morning she was laying on the bottom. She did eat fine last night, so I'm hoping I'm over-reacting, but I'm not feeling confident. Any ideas??

My percula's sleep on the sand like that every night and they also twitch at each other this is normal for percula's. Are you doing a hypo treatment for ick?

She sounds like she's sleeping.
