Test Kits

Hey folks,

Thanks for the advice on my previous thread. I saw a master test kit at my LFS for $59.99 (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph, alkalinity, etc.) What type of test kits would you suggest I start with...individual or master? What brand is the best for the money? Where online would should I purchase them.

Check out our Sponsors page. I think you will find all the kits you need at the Premium Aquatic or Marine Depot. I use individual kits for everything made by Salifert, however, there are many other good quality test kits out there.

I think you were 'one click' away from the Forum you wanted to post this in, so I've relocated it.

If you are planning on a saltwater fish only aquarium, then you'd not want that master test kit. If you are planning a saltwater fish only aquarium with live rock, you need pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate for sure. If you want/plan on having a lot of coralline growth, then you'd want to at least test calcium and alkalinity too.

I hope you will setup and run a quarantine tank. For this you should have medications on hand, too. I'd suggest at least:
Methylene Blue
Maracyn Two for Saltwater Fish
Cupramine and two test kits: Salifert Copper and Seachem Copper
Praziquantel

If you want to have more meds on hand, then in addition to the above, I'd also suggest:
Formalin (Formaldehyde 37%)
Clout tablets
Beta Glucan (a food additive you can get from a health food store)

Additional equipment for the quarantine tank will be a sponge filter and a refractometer (in addition to some inexpensive lighting).
