Sure it would work, but I only ever use 2 baffles, right before the return pump to keep out the bubbles.

It looks like you added a lot of complexity there, I too would ditch the balls.

I'd get rid of the bio balls and use a drip plate for better gas exchange. You won't need miracle mud either.

Right then ive just read that miricle mud is a bunch of arse, so im not gonna use that any more.
so now i need a whole new designe, thats were you guys come in, the aim of me building a sump is to get rid of the stuff i have in my tank making it look messy(i.e.. 3 big black filters). and to get rid of nitrate and phosphate as im hoping my live rock in my tank will take care of the ammonia and nitrite. so what do you all suggest for me to put in my sump/refugium to do this task??

thanks
james

i do have a refugium in it. i just have some LR and cheato in there. the 4 baffles at the end are so no microbubbles come through. also gives me a space to put carbon or other media in when i need too. in those same baffles i put my probes also.

hihi mate
to get rid of phosphate, maybe u can consider putting a fluidised reactor into yr sump filled with some phospate removing media eg, rowaphos...

a gd skimmer will help to prevent additional nitrates frm forming... as for existing nitrates, u cud try nutrient removal by growing macroalgae (eg chaeto) in one of yr sump compartment...

IMO you need to add a couple baffles between the refugium and the retun pump. with it flowing over like it is into the pump return you will get lots micro bubbles in the tank, JMO

what kind of flow will have going through there? if low flow might not get that many bubbles but if higher flow rates are going to be going through it you will have lots of unwanted micro bubbles.

i was thinking of havin about 700 - 1000 liters per hour through there, ok ill add a couple of baffles then that will give me some room for chemical media as well, cheers

hihi wozza... my sump is 2.5ft by 2 ft by 2 ft n i hv 2 return pumps attached... 1 from sump direct back to tank ... 2nd one from sump to chiller & then back to tank with a t to fluidised reactor... This 2nd one by the time it gets beack to the tank the flow is not strong at all...

each pump is rated at 3000 (tunze & aquabee) litre per hr . Plse note that by the time the water gets pumped up back into tank & if t eed off to some other equipment b4 back to tank the flow rate can be diminished by a great deal...
