I am new to the board and to saltwater tanks. We have a tank that has been set-up for approx. 6 months. It is a 44 gallon and currently have one cardinal, two clowns, two damsels and a firefish (they are all small in size). We are interested in adding a yellow tang, is this a good idea? Can the tank handle it and also anything bad with a yellow tang and also with putting it with our current fish. Appreciate anyones help with this. Thanks from a newcomer!!

Hi boats160, welcome to Reefland!
Unfortunately, a 44-gal tank is really not large enough for any of the Tangs. They require more space to roam around and if you try to put one in a tank the size of yours there is a good possibility of stress related problems like Cryptocaryonosis (saltwater ich). Ninong ------------------ "I want it to be said that the Bush administration was a results-oriented administration, because I believe the results of focusing our attention and energy on teaching children to read and having an education system that's responsive to the child and to the parents, as opposed to mired in a system that refuses to change, will make America what we want it to be—a literate country and a hopefuller country."—George W. Boats,
I am glad you asked. I agree with Ninong. I would consider a 75 gallon a good enough size for one yellow tang. For your information, I feel they are very hardy when given what they need. I do not consider them ick magnets. What they need is a tank of at least 75 gallons and not to mix them with another tang unless you have an even larger tank--probably 125 and up. They need a tank that is arranged to supply a good amount of swimming room, good water circulation and good water parameters. Feed them lots of greens--most of them will eat green Seaweed Selects as if it is going out of style! Scott

i agree with them. i tried to put a yellow tang in my 55gl tank when i was new to the saltwater thing. the fish lived fine but was killing my smaller fish. plus he does need more room to swim around because he was not satisfied in mine but when i put him into a bigger tank he reacted great.
