I recently removed some old hollow decorations and found a blackish algea or decomposition which when I removed it smelled like sulfer. Any idea what it is? I recently lost a few fish, could this have been a cause?

WELCOME TO REEFLAND!
Sorry I didn't notice your post until just now. Don't know how it got past me?! When organic material 'decomposes' in a low oxygen environment (called either "anaerobic" because there is no oxygen or, ''anoxic" when very low in oxygen) the bacteria that live and do the decomposition produce hydrogen sulfide (gas). This is deadly to fish and smells like bad or rotten eggs.
