Jon:
I'm not sure what your asking...If it is "will my tank look like yours"
, or will your lions survive in a tank w/ Live Rock and w/ NO substrate. Then the answer can be yes.....
I do nothing more than be diligent.
You need to provide a good biofilter (and live rock is sufficent), the CC substrate is mainly for looks. If you have the time and patience to vaccum then use CC, if not skip it. To me a tank is a tank, and the rest is up to you....there are many ways to acheive the same endpoint. AS I mentioned. Good water maintence, quality foods, dilgence, and some working knowledge.
Does this anwer youre Q?

yep i think some day i'm gonna get a nice big tank for a few lions....in due time. i think the extra work would be well worth it. where did you run across that yellow lion? he's a beaut! too rich for my blood though![]()

Responding to just the original post in this thread:
Feed most kinds of Lionfishes marine fishes and crustaceans. Those are its normal foods. NEVER feed fresh water fishes or crustaceans. These have the wrong kinds of fats in them that the marine Lionfish can't digest. I have responded to hundreds of posts on dying Lionfish that expire from a fat problem internally from a diet of freshwater fishes.
The best foods are whole marine foods -- not just the flesh of the fish or crustacean -- the whole organism. They can be purchased from your LFS then properly quarantined (or frozen a couple of days then thawed), or some can be gotten from large fish grocery stores. No one kind of food should be routinely offered; vary the diet. Supplement its diet with vitamins and proper fats and the fish, if kept in proper water and conditions, should live more than 20 years in captivity.

Kinda funny actually-- the post being reawakened after 9 yrs.
Thanks for the reply Leebca
you hit on key points, marine based foods, and variety.
Thanks. Just waiting for it to settle before I close the thread. I close threads that have been 'reawakened.'
