Question Cycling

I am only "1-month old" in the salt world. I feel like I am chasing my tank, trying to prevent one thing after another. I made the mistake of putting a Hippo Tang in before the "cycle". Two days ago, toxic ammonia, today toxic nitrite. I did a water change two days ago and now I am afraid of the nitrites...the fish seems to be doing fine...he is swimming and eating. Should I just let things run there course? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Re: Cycling

You would like to save the fish. The fish won't die immediately, but will die slowly sometimes. So the fish is dieing.

It would be wise to return the fish to where you got it from and obtain a credit. After that, give the tank time.

It might also be a very good idea to read the link posted below and see where you are at and start taking the setup along at a slower pace.

Re: Cycling

Hi lanemuscle,

Honestly, you should remove the fish (perhaps back to the store that you purchased it from temporarily) until the tank has finished cycling. The water conditions in a new tank, even that in a tank 2-3 months old, isn't suitable for these more sensitive fish.

What size, type of tank do you have? Filters, and other equipment? Liverock, livesand?

Re: Cycling

Say it isn't so...I got it from Petco...they will not take it back...I did not know about any of this until after I bought my fish. I let my tank run for a couple of weeks and it was not until after I purchased my fish that anyone told my about cycling and how it works. Before that I had read some...and talked to 4 different pet stores and had my water tested at 1 of them. I have a 46 gallon tank, Magnum 350, SeaClone, and Bio-Wheel 170. I also have live rock, a tomato clown, and a serper star and 4 turbo snails.
