Live Rock question

I have a 75G tank, and was wondering how much Live Rock I should use for a FO setup. Right now I have about 60lbs of marine base rock in there.

Also Im using a canister filter, what filter media would be most suitable for my setup? currently I have layers of filter mesh a sponge and carbon mesh bag.
I plan on having about 4 of the smaller Tangs and possibly a cleaner wrasse.

Re: Live Rock question

You may want to rethink you stocking choices.
i think the general concences is that a 90gal is the mimium any tang can be kept in, but as for 4 in the same 75gal well i dont think thats a good idea, concidering that the smallist tang i know of gets to 6" long
Saltwater Aquarium Fish for Marine Aquariums: Bristletooth Tomini Tang and is stated to be aggressive towards other tangs.

And for the cleaner wrasse.....well check out this thread
cleaner wrasses.....yes or no

i hope you decided they are tottaly insuitable for aquarium life and should be left in the ocean.

hope this help james

P.S. oh and i think for a fowlr tank the amount of live rock is soposed to be about 1.5-2lbs per gal of display tank volume.

Re: Live Rock question

My favorite fishes are the Tangs, Butterflies, and Angels, Irvine. A "small Tang" is an oxymoron.

Your 75 gallon isn't suitable for Tang husbandry. If Tangs are your goal, you should prepare to setup at least a 180 gallon aquarium. However, the 75 is suitable for many other very interesting marine lifeforms.

If you are interested in a fish only with live rock (FOWLR) aquarium, I suggest you read this: Setting Up a FOWLR Aquarium

Wozza is quite right about the cleaner wrasse. In addition to the thread wozza referenced, you should also read this to learn more about just what 'service' a cleaner fish performs: Why Do Fish Clean? OR Picky Fish!

With regards to live rock, you should get a baseline of terminology and decide the kind of 'live rock' you want. This is a good starting point: What is Live Rock, Anyway?

Good luck!

Re: Live Rock question

Thanks Wozza for the reply and the info, nothing is definite at the moment.

Lee, I know what 'Live Rock' is, and what I called 'marine base rock' is basically 'dead' live rock, base rock is generally what its called around here. thanks again for the info.
