new setup help

Hi all,

Just did a new setup for my girlfriend and i have encountered something odd.

we did not have any salt so we just filled the tank with fresh to check the pumps ect. and the water went cloudy, we have since added salt and its still cloudy, any ideas what that could be?

any suggestions to get rid of it?

Re: new setup help

how long after you filled it with fresh did it go cloudy?
if it was a few days it could be a bacterial bloom, i think the best way is just to wate, i think it will go after a few days.

cheers james

Re: new setup help

The fresh water came in contact with something that partially dissolved or became suspended in it. When the fresh water was added, was there already substrate and/or live rock in the system? Other than plumbing and equipment what else was in with the fresh water?

Re: new setup help

yes there was substrate, coral sand. It was not live,

However i think some of the rock work i put in was alive (did not think it would be as it has been out of the water for about 2 months). i think this as the water had a bit of a smell and went clody about the next day (after adding fresh).

We did a water change today, and that seemed to help a little, but think we will wait now, Unless there is any suggestions or ideas whats up.

Re: new setup help

If you didn't rinse the crushed coral it will cloud your water and if the rock was once alive all of what used to be alive has rotted and caused a bacterial bloom. It will clear eventually but it take a little while. By the way you will need liverock in this tank eventually

Re: new setup help

Your plan was not a bad one except for (the obvious) the fact you had potential living things in the tank.

You might attach a good mechanical filter on the tank for a while to clear it out and perform water changes to help clear it up.

You dont NEED LR, i dont have any in my 12 gallon and it runs just fine. Isnt this the Fish only part of the forums?

Yes, it is, but FOWLR (fish-only with live rock) is one of the most common types of fish-only aquariums. Live rock is a popular filtration option for fish-only aquariums but some people operate their systems without live rock.

The point of a fish only tank is that there is no LR. Thats why it becomes a FOWLR why is it not called the FO and FOWLR forum then?

Re: new setup help

Perhaps there's a language barrier. We seem to be two nations separated by a common language.

The main heading is Saltwater (Fish-Only) Aquariums. There are two types of these FO aquariums. They are sub-topics. One is with LR the other is without LR. For thriving fishes, either is a suitable choice, as each has its own way of controlling water quality. LR FO aquariums have become popular in the last 20 years.

The life on the LR will vary with the kinds of fish being kept. There will be few or no polyps if different Butterflyfishes and/or Angelfishes are kept; few or no algae with certain Tangs; few or no external worms with certain carnivore fishes. So at some point the LR in a FO aquarium just becomes a part of the biological filter for the FO aquarium. It's like having live sand. Since we talk about FO aquariums with live sand, and deep sand beds that perform denitrification like the LR does, it would seem reasonable to include FOWLR discussions in the FO aquarium Forum when that LR is just a part of the biological filter for the fish wastes.

Since the Forum was titled FO aquariums then that includes those with and without LR and various other biologically filtered FO systems.

When we named it the Fish-Only forum, we intended that description to include all marine aquariums that contained fish but not invertebrates.

Live rock is nothing more than a filtration method. When hobbyists describe their marine aquarium as a FOWLR tank, it is simply a way of adding additional information about their chosen filtration for their marine aquarium. In effect, they are bragging that their marine aquarium employs live rock and should not be confused with those tanks that house dead coral skeletons and other sterile decorations, which hobbyists who favor live rock usually consider quaint and obsolete -- to borrow a phrase from Attorney General Gonzales.
