Are Desolving 4 day fish feeders any good?
Are desolving 4 day fish feeders any good?
The reason is ask is, I like to travel alot. I take weekend trips quite frequently. Currently the animals that i plan to keep dont need to be fed every day, so if i go away for the weekend, if the dont get fed druing that time they will be ok. So i was wondering about adding fish to my tank in the future. specificy clown fish or yellow tang. It is my understanding that these fish should be fed daily. I have noticed a product in the fish store that is called 4 day fish feeder. It looks like a little stone. I understand that it desolves over the period of 4 days and releases food into the tank. Has anyone used these? do they work as intended? arey the bad for the fish? Are they bad for the tank? will this fufull the needs of clown fish or yellow tangs? --Mitch |

I've never used those, Mitch. Since there automatic feeders available that deliver flake and pellet, I think those blocks aren't needed.
As to their value. . .I'm unsure they won't pollute the tank. Nor am I sure the fish will know it to be something to eat. Well fed and nutritionally sound fishes will be fine not eating over a weekend. You might find some other ideas here, even though it isn't the 'perfect' topic you're interested in: How to Feed Your Fish Throughout the Day I travel 100 days a year. I have to have someone come in and feed my fishes. It's a fact of life, for me. But. . .I'd rather own the fish!

How do you define "well fed"
would the fish tolerate not being fed every weekend for example? what is the maximum length of time the fish can go unfed on a vacation? If i went on a weekend trip, sould i feed them friday before i leave (late afternoon) and then again sunday when i return (midnight) or just wait untill monday? |

Re: Are Desolving 4 day fish feeders any good?
"Well fed" includes but isn't limited to:
1. Proper supplements (fats and vitamins); 2. Proper foods in proper quantities; and 3. No less than 3 feedings per day. Well fed also means following this advice 'perfectly:' Feeding Marine Fish and Fish Nutrition Missing every weekend may be a stretch for captive fish, but it depends on it being "well fed" in between and the type of fish. Fish captured in the wild that have had the proper nutrition, foods, and quantity can live more than 3 weeks in captivity without eating. It takes about that long for the fish to die of starvation (counting the weeks from the day it was caught/captured). However, in captivity there are many more stressors than in the wild. If the fasting time is extended, then it will need 'beefing up' over a two or three week period, minimum. Late Friday, and wait until Monday a.m.
