Help and Advice please
Hello all,
My aquarium had a major disaster last night..My tank is a 156L FOWLR tank with live rock (10Kg), a canister filter and cooler. Yesterday during my routine maintenance, I changed 40L of the tank water with freshly prepared saltwater (using RO Water). After 8 hrs of changing the water, my friend's kid pulled out the tube connecting the filter to the cooler and almost 120L of water was pumped out of the tank within seconds. So, I had to prepare 120L of water immediately (using de-chlorinated water & not RO water) and fill up the tank. Since all the water in the tank is new, I am afraid if this will cause any issues to the fishes inside. Can someone please advice me on what might happen now !! thank you.. |

Re: Help and Advice please
If the salinity, temperature and pH of the new water was reasonably close to the old tankwater that drained out, you may be just fine. A lot depends on exactly what fish you have and how sensitive they are to major water changes.

Re: Help and Advice please
In general, the bacteria that support the biological filter should not be affected by what you've done so far.
Some depends upon the tap water quality in your area. Although dechlorinators are usually sulfate based, they don't take care of all the impurities' in tap water. Dissolving salt should be a 48-hour mix to be conservative. Emergencies don't count, I know. When you have accumulated enough RO water again, mix up new saltwater, let it mix for 48 hours and then perform another large water change. Keep up your water changes after that, according to this recommendation: how do I do a water change? I would also tell your friend not to bring his kid around anymore. Good luck!

Re: Help and Advice please
HI,
How long should I wait before making that first major water change with salt water made out of RO Water ? should I wait for a week ? Also, I would like to know one more thing. Are there any aquarists in the US who will be ready to ship a over-flow type aquarium to Japan ? Cheers |

Re: Help and Advice please
Perform the large (60%+) water change as soon as you have water ready.
Regarding business, you want to post that in a different Forum/place.

Re: Help and Advice please
I think you can post such things in the Sale Trade Zone Forum.

Re: Help and Advice please
You would be much better off making your own tank using overflows. It is very easy to construct a slim line box spaning the whole length of the back side. Drilling the holes is the most difficult part but is worth it considering all the money you save.
Are we allowed to cross post to other forums? I don't want to break any rules. Carl |

Re: Help and Advice please
I don't think I understand your question. Why would you need to get an aquarium from the U.S.? As far as I know, virtually every type of aquarium under the sun is available in Japan.

Re: Help and Advice please
If there is a difference in cost, it would be more than offset by the cost of shipping between the U.S. and Japan.
