any suggestions for a newb??

Hey all!
first off I have to say that this site is awesome and very helpful!

I have to setup (and, of course, maintain) a 10 gal FOWLR tank (small, I know) for a year long school project (i'm taking the setup with me after graduation).
I'm looking for any tips/ comments on my new setup.

The tank had an ammonia spike about a week ago and has since settled.

Any suggestions as far as livestock goes or any other equipment i might have forgotten would be much appreciated

Setup: (i'm doing this all from memory since the setup is at school)
10 gal. All Glass
Marineland Penguin 100 BIO-Wheel Power Filter 100 GPH
18'' 15w 50/50 flourescent
100w heater
thermometer
Saltwater Master Liquid Test Kit
9.5lbs live rock
10lbs Nature's Ocean Bio-Active Live Argonite Reef Sand
~l.5-2lb calcium carbonate substrate below the live sand

it has been up and running for almost 2 weeks.

Re: any suggestions for a newb??

I had a similar set-up to that a couple of years ago, I found it to be an enjoyable challenge. I had a solitary yellowtail blue damsel in there, who over time became fairly tame. There was a Mantis shrimp in there too, at one stage, that was obviously a hitch-hiker on the L/R, that caused me some greif.

Biggest problems for me were keeping the salinity right - the tank had no lid, so evaporation was a problem. Daily tests and topp-offs were required. Other than that I enjoyed my little tank. I'm sure more ppl will have advice for you - I'm still a bit of a novice
