Question clown fish are fighting

I just got my first fish, a blue damsel and two maroon clown fish. I have had the tank for 2 weeks. 55 gal and 35 lbs of live rock. The clowns have been in there for two days and one keeps on attacking the other. The one being attacked has been hiding at the top in the corner most of the time. He looks like he has had a couple of bites on his rear fin. Is this normal? When will it end. The damsil is very happy.

Re: clown fish are fighting

WELCOME TO REEFLAND!

There are several things 'not right' about the information you've provided. Fish should not be put into a marine aquarium until that aquarium has matured. This maturing process can take up to a few months. You may want to read the post on how to setup an aquarium, and the most regarding a mature aquarium:
Setting Up a FOWLR Aquarium
The Mature Aquarium

Next, the rate of adding fish to a new system should be at the rate of about 1 fish every 6 to 8 weeks. Two many fish too soon can create water quality issues -- some of which you may not even detect: What is Water Quality

The two Anemonefish are likely not going to get along. When one beats up on the other it is usually to establish which one will become the female and male. The dominant one (the bully) becomes the female. Even after mating, the female can be such a bully that it constantly picks on the male.

35 pounds of live rock is 'short' if you want to keep a FOWLR system. See the above link. I'm happy to add that you have a good sized aquarium for these three fishes. Not much room left for any other fish, though.

Remember that Anemonefish are also Damselfishes. The three ultimately will not likely get along, with the BD becoming quite a nuisance over time, or creating a lot of stress on the Anemonefishes trying to pair.

If the one in the corner is still eating and you are providing it the proper nutrition, it should remain healthy, in a mature aquarium. Under these circumstances, the fish can go downhill quite quickly. Keep a watch on the picked on fish. If it isn't eating; stops eating; then move it to another aquarium, or give it a divider from the other fishes so you can get it to eat in peace.

If you're a new hobbyist, then Reefland has many experienced and helpful people. Also if you are new, you'll want to do a lot of reading to catch up and learn the best ways of doing things and the choices you have. This post contains links to other posts of topics you should become familiar with:

Good luck!

Re: clown fish are fighting

damselfish are usually only used for cycling tanks frasher and then are removed. u usually can bring them back to your lfs for credit.

Re: clown fish are fighting

You should be aware, LRR that using marine fish to cycle a marine aquarium is no longer necessary, not needed, and no longer advised because of the inhumane treatment of them for this process. The process for starting a FO or FOWLR aquarium is given here: Setting Up a FOWLR Aquarium
