He may be referring to the common bristleoworm: Bristleworm photo.

Re: Newbie needs help to identify.....

Sounds like a bristleworm to me too. Harmless, and even beneficial scavengers in a marine tank.

For your next point idenitify the following:

I do have another creature that hitchiked on the LR looks a bit like a centipede sorta thing (but not so many legs) has long attanae, body about 10mm long, is browny colour, moves pretty fast, appears to feed off stuff on the LR any ideas?

Re: Newbie needs help to identify.....

That one would probably best be handled by someone in the Reef forum. I'll bet they would want a photo.

Re: Newbie needs help to identify.....

Hi again,

Anyone know how big bristleworms can grow?

Can they become pests? If I need to keep them under control what's best?

I've seen about half a dozen or so, so far one of which is about 4 inches long!!!!

Thx

Ron

Re: Newbie needs help to identify.....

I've seen them up to 6" but don't know their maximum size.

They usually don't get to the pest level. They keep the substrate moving around and keep the tank clean of extra nutrients. If you have an 'outbreak' of them and their numbers seem to be getting large, then it is because they are being fed. Look to see what has died (and remove it) and avoid over-feeding. Remove uneaten foods and keep the tank clean of detritus and organics. Their numbers will usually fall back to a state of how many of them are 'needed' by the limitations of nutrients in the tank.
